  • How do I edit images in fcp 7 without having to render them

Posted by Terence Nance on April 4, 2010 at 4:28 pm

I’m cutting an animatic together for an animated section of my film. I drew the storyboards and scanned them in, re-sized them to 640 x 360px and saved them as jpgs.

I set up my sequence preset to pro-res LT 640 x 360 23.98fps with a square pixel aspect ratio.

When I attempt to drop my images into the sequence for editing I get the dreaded red render bar and must render every single edit. It is very laborious and I know at some point in the past I was able to edit images without rendering.

I tried 80 other codecs, all the different pro-res codecs, the animation codec, none, the dv codecs, nothing worked.

I tried to use all the image file types i could think of: png, jpg, gif, psd, tif, bmp, nothing worked.

this is what it all looks like. https://blkcinematheque.com/fcpimages.png

as you can see in the Viewer window I haven’t changed anything about the image that would require me to render it.

Please anyone put me up on a workflow for editing still images that will allow me to avoid all the rendering.

    thanks.

I’d scan your pix at 1280×720. Keep the ProResLT. You’ve given FCP a non-standard frame size and it’s trying to unsuccessfully scale the pix in real time.

How much installed RAM do you have?

The amount of system RAM in gigabytes and the collective gigabytes of all unrendered stills has pretty much a one to one relationship to realtime performance, but only up to a point. Because FCP at this point is still a 32-bit app, it can only use just so much RAM. So, even increasing RAM substantially won’t give you a tremendous amount of increased RT when editing/animating stills.
