How do I create a a highlight on an ring?

Hi,

Can anyone help me?!

I need to put a highlight around the top of a ring. The illustration below (if I have uploaded it correctly) will show you what I mean.

The image on the left is an example of what I am trying to achieve with the image on the right (my illustrator file).

Does anyone have any good ideas?
