How do I convert avi files to mov to edit in FCP?
I am trying to create a quick idea reel for a documentary piece and am stitching together clips from other films. How do I edit with various formats? Right now I am trying to convert an avi file to mov but can’t figure it out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Depending of the AVI codec (AVI is just an envelope) can be as easy as re-wrapping the file as QT.
Open the AVI in MPGStreamclip, and SAVE AS > QT.
This works for DV, DVCPro and few other codecs.
The advantage is that is very fast process and do not degrades the picture. There is not rendering involved just rewrapping the original A/V info on a new container.
