  • how do I bring my HD footage(AVCHD) into Premiere CS4?

Posted by Joe Daniels on January 30, 2010 at 5:09 pm

I bought a new camcorder that exports AVCHD (.mts) files. Can this file be brought into Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 Master? If so, what is the proper way to bring this file in? What do I select? Is there a trick? I did a test, I put it on the timeline, did my edits…exported and the finished clip looked bad! I exported as an uncompressed avi.(which normally with my other clips this works fine, just new to the AVCHD (.mts) stuff!

So what am I missing here? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Am i bringing in or exporting wrong or both!

    Hi Joe,

Even though CS4 supports AVCHD, it can be difficult to work with. It may be easier to work with an intermediate codec such as Cineform NeoScene, it has a free trial download you can experiment with.

I haven’t had problems with importing that footage into CS4. Maybe it’s just luck. However, I do have to remind myself to ensure the Presets are set to AVCHD 1080p, that the fps and frame sizes are same as imported file. I usually have issues only when presets, prefs, or sizes don’t match. Seems obvious, but I occasionally forget this.

But you may already know this. I even import 1920×1200 footage into projs with presets AVCHD 1080p 29.97 and they turn out crisp and clean when exported to avi, H264, and MP4. Hope this helps.

    Mike…Jeff…

Thank you so much for the speedy responses. I will give that a shot! So when I do bring in the footage correctly, how do I export it? What I mean is…if I want to trim the fat of the footage from the cam, then later on if I want to add stuff, say like in After Effects, how would I export it from Premiere Pro?
