  • How Do I add light to a dark video?

Posted by Michael Donnel on March 26, 2009 at 12:28 am

I am using Vegas 8 to try and fix an old wedding video where the videographer did not have enough light. The video is dark is places (well a lot of areas) and was wondering if vegas 8 can lighten that video up enough so that I dont have to turn the lights off in the living room to watch it.

Yes it can but when you do you will find that most of the dark video is also very grainy due to lack of light so you will be increasing this noise/grain. I would use Levels to bring the blacks & whites more in line and then use Color Curves and make an ‘S’ curve to keep the balance between dark and light. Finally you might want to get a noise reduction plug-in to deal with the extra noise that will be brought out.

How does the video look on the Vegas Timeline? Is that dark? How are you getting the image to the TV screen now? Have you produced a DVD? If so, what were the settings?

My point is this, IF you are saying that you are ONLY seeing dark once it has been produced for the TV, maybe the settings to go to the TV are incorrect? Or the TV needs to be reset too?

this video was recorded back 1993 and so I did not create it. It is dark in the vagas timeline.

    Curves or levels should help.
Expect noise/grain. You *might* try Mike Crash’ Denoise filter.

The Vegas plugin NeatVideo might also improve the grains a little.
