  • How do I add a blurry edge to a black bar?

Posted by Frank Manno on September 26, 2007 at 7:02 am

I made a black bar that goes across the bottom third of my screen which I am going to use to add some text.

I made the black bar by creating a black solid on layer 1 and with the track motion controls I brought it down to the bottom of the screen so that it looks like a black bar going across.

My visuals are on the track below on track 2.

Anyway, I’d like the top edge of this black bar to be blurry and in doing so, of lower opacity. Just the TOP of the bar not the whole thing.

I can’t seem to work out how to do this. I thought I might be able to with the cookie cutter but can’t. I haven’t tried all that hard really.

How can I make the top edge of a black bar blurry so it fades into nothing? Or maybe lower the opacity. Anything so long as it’s not a hard edge.

    Instead of a SOLID Black:

GO > Media Generator > Color GRADIENT > “Linear Black to Transparent” – you’ll need to adjust the rotation of the the two “bands” – and downwards to lower third too, but I’ll bet you’ll find what you want in there. That WOULD give you fade to/from a black. But would you still want soft focus too?

A second option would be to go into Pan/Crop, turn on Bezier Masking, mask out the area you want to keep and turn on Feathering for the edge.

Vegas has several ways this can be accomplished.
