  • How do control render output file types?

I am just learning After Effects CS4. When I render a practice composition to a movie file, it always comes out as an AVI file, yet the book I am using says I should get a Quicktime (MOV) file as a result of the rendering process. If I click on the proposed filename next to Output to: in the Render Queue window, it brings up an Output Movie To: dialogue box. Under “Save as Type:”, the only option is Video for Windows (AVI). The sample CD that comes with this training book has the same output file(s), but in MOV (Quicktime) format, which is much more compact than AVI files, so I’d like to be able to have that as an option, but not sure how to enable that. Any help is appreciated. *** Thanks ***

You want to be changing the Output Module first. This is where the file type is established.

Take a look at the manual and there’s a detailed section on exporting and setting up Output Modules. I highly recommend setting up templates for your commonly used export format.

    Hope that helps,
    Ben
