How can you create a dashed line like for a MAP journey?
Posted by Daniel Haskett on October 18, 2006 at 11:51 amHi there
Basically i want to show a journey across a map and was just wondering the best way to do this in photoshop, id preferably like a clean dashed line….if that makes sense?
Thanks in advance!

While tedious, an individual segment of the line per layer would get you what you want. That would be a lot of layers. Start with the final line and reduce it by one dash, save file, then remove another segment of the dash, save file, etc. until you’re down to only one dash. Put the layers back together with 1+2+3+4…until the map is redrawn with all the segments revealed.I think creating an Action would reduce the time to create and save the layers as files.
This is a crude and elementary way to do the animation but it would work and you could use blending options to enhance the look of the dashed line.

October 21, 2006 at 9:44 pmYou could also use a mask in your video editing program… You would create the complete dashed line in Photoshop, and then “reveal” it cumulatively by moving the mask over time in Premiere, for example…

October 30, 2006 at 11:46 amOr create path in Illustrator (or PS then copy/paste or save path to Illust) then stroke the path in Illustrator as a dashed line, then either save AI file for placement back in PS or just copy as paste as smart object direct.
I’m amazed there isn’t a dashed line option in PS (or is there?) but this workaround is pretty quick.
