  • How can I use 37fps slomo shot 720p50?

Hi, (this thread posted in the varicam forum by mistake)

I have some 720p50 footage shot at a frame rate of 37fps. I imported it into Final Cut from a P2 card. It is coming up saying it is 720p 50fps and if I scroll through I can see 37 different frames per second with the rest duplicate frames. This all makes sense but how can I convert this to a clip that will play properly as a slowmo as intended.

I gather I need to somehow remove the duplicate frames. I understand this can be done with 720p60 footage using the frame rate converter plug-in but is there no way to do this with 720p50 material?

I have a feeling that the guys shooting this might be using the wrong setting.

Any help would be much apreciated as I have been searching the forums for hours!

    Chris

They should have shot in 720/25pN mode at 37 fps; that would give you the inherent slow-mo look.

AFAIK, right now there’s not much you can do with that clip on a Mac to get the frame rate you’re looking for. There’s a frame rate converter utility available for US/60Hz files that strips out the duplicate frame rates, but AFAIK it doesn’t work for 50Hz yet. Try nagging Apple to update their utility to do that.

You could take the file over to a PC and strip out the duplicate frames using Raylight, and then you’d still have to conform the timebase of the clip to be 25fps. Not sure how you’d go about getting it back to the Mac though.

What happens when you use the time-remapping tool?

    Thanks for your responses,

So, are you saying that if I record 720/25pn then when I import from the P2 card to FCP it would create a 25fps (but slowmo) clip automatically. If so I will let the camera guy know this.

The workaround I have found is simply to apply a slowmo to the clip and work in a 50fps timeline. This looks ok but I imagine not as good as a proper frame for frame slomo.

Well it’s worth a peek into the manual you have to set 25pN as your recording format and then set the variable frame rate for the desired level of slow motion.

I’ve used the Apple Cinema Tools to conform a clip to a different frame rate. It would not let me conform the QuickTime clip I imported from my Firestore 100, saying it had temporal compression, but when I sent the clip to Compressor and used the same setting as the clip already had (DVCPROHD 720p50) and then used Cinema Tools on the resulting clip, it allowed me to change the frame rate.

I don’t have a lot of experience with this process, but until the Panasonic Frame Rate Converter supports 50 fps, it may be a workaround.
