  • How can I import mp4 files in Sony Vegas Pro 8?

Posted by Katey Jones on August 18, 2011 at 11:51 pm

Every time I try and drag the mp4 file into my trimmer, only the audio is visible. The place where the video should be is just empty. Not black or red or anything, just empty.

GSpot says the audio codec is mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC

and the video codec is avc1 (H.264/MPEG-4 AVC)
and then underneath “Codec Status Undetermined”

I have a friend who can play mp4 files just fine, with the same version of Vegas as me. So I’m not sure what’s wrong with mine.

    Any suggestions? :/

Those codecs seem OK and should play in Vegas. At the bottom left corner of GSpot there are two buttons labeled (1) & (2) under MS A/V. Press the (1) button to see what filters will be used to play the video. Press the (2) button to see if the video plays. If it doesn’t then see what the error is.

Do you have any codec-paks installed? They could be messing with Vegas’ ability to playback files. You might want to uninstall them if you do and re-install Vegas to re-establish the Vegas codecs.

Also try and figure out what’s different about your friend’s computer from yours.

When I pressed the 1 button this is what appeared:

And the video played fine when I pressed 2.

I had the K-Lite Codex pack installed. But I uninstalled it and restarted and nothing has changed. I’m still only getting the audio.

And my bad. I asked my friend just now and she says she has Vegas Pro 9, not 8.

[Katey Jones] “When I pressed the 1 button this is what appeared:”

This is what’s great about utilities like GSpot. You can really see what’s going on inside your PC. I dropped an MP4 file that I downloaded from YouTube into GSpot and this is what I got:

Your PC is inserting something called the Microsoft DTV DVD Video Decoder and then DirectVobSub before Video Render and my codecs show Video Codec: avc1 Name: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and Audio Codec: mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC just like you.

[Katey Jones] “I had the K-Lite Codex pack installed. But I uninstalled it and restarted and nothing has changed. I’m still only getting the audio.”

Make sure that you re-install Vegas after uninstalling the codec back to re-establish the Vegas Pro codecs.

[Katey Jones] “And my bad. I asked my friend just now and she says she has Vegas Pro 9, not 8.”

This is good because it’s forcing you to question everything and see the differences.

So it looks like some piece of software has registered a DVD Video Decoder for playback of MPEG4 files and it’s causing Vegas to not play the file. You might want to ask your friend to make the same GSpot test and see what their results are.

I sent my friend an email but she hasn’t replied yet.

How can I go about fixing this in the meantime? Or will I not know until my friend replies?
