  • How can I identify filmed MiniDV tape content and then choose best/appropriate preset for FCP?

Posted by Brendan Tyler on August 18, 2011 at 1:52 pm

    Hi.

I have been given a box of nondescript Mini DV tapes (without details or labelled instructions).

I need to import all of this footage into a timeline to edit down into 2/3 showreels (net & DVD)

I need to import them into FCP (version 5 updated) and export using DVD Studio Pro.

Can anyone recommend/suggest which format each tape/the footage was filmed in ?

What is the best preset/custom setting to choose in FCP to get the best out of the footage?

Should the export option mirror the import setting for best quality possible?

Apologies if this is a simple ask, but I would really appreciate any/all positive feedback …

    Many thanks in advance.

    MAC 10.6.8
    FCP
    All Footage PAL

No way to know which format a MiniDV tape is, but playing it.
Could be DV PAL or DV NTSC; Anamorphic or 4×3. 48 or 32Khz audio.
Could be HDV instead of DV.

    The same was recorded.

Do they play in your DV deck or camera?
Capturing DV tape via Firewire is a straight transfer of data.

There’s no metadata on mini dv so I guess the best way is to look at the material once you capture it.
I have edited all my minidv as dv format, it’s the automatic format that final cut gives you when you capture minidv and hi8. Maybe you can capture it as Prores (I AM not sure) but I had never has any problem with dv.

    Hi

Thanks to everyone who has left comment

I will go through each tape and apply your parameters, comments and suggestions

I understand that there isn’t a ‘magic bullet’ fix, but I appreciate all of your input.

    Cheers and Lovely …
