How can I have Dual VGA and 1 Composite or HDMI Monitors?
I just recently retired my Discreet Logic editing system and had a PC Built with a new Intel i7 Processor (64 bit) and am using Vegas 8.1 very happily. However, My old edit system gave me 2 VGA monitors for the timeline, bins, preview windows, and various other windows and then I had an additional composite video monitor for viewing actual program video. I feel certain that with the combination of the right software settings and the right video card, I can achieve this same configuration (possibly using an HDMI monitor in place of the composite monitor). I have looked around for a card that will do this and can only seem to find a matrox card that apparently works only with Adobe Premiere. Can someone offer me any help or direction with this? To be viewing “Program Video” in a window on my computer monitor leaves a lot to be desired and it very difficult for a client to see what’s going on while I’m editing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There are two ways to view program material from Vegas:
(1) For SD you must use an Digital-to-Analog firewire converter such as the Canopus ADVC-110, ADVC-300, ADS Tech A/V Link, etc. Vegas doesn’t support any other way of viewing SD except via firewire. Even an old camcorder with passthru will do.
(2) For HD you can use your Windows Secondary Monitor to display on your second LCD or even to an HD TV using a DVI-to-HDMI cable. You can also use an AJA Xena LH, LHe, LS, or LSe card. Those are pretty much your two HD options for preview.
Of course you can send HD out the firewire but it will be downsampled to SD.

Thanks John, If I am reading this right then the only way I can view SD and HD program video on a third monitor is to use a composite monitor and downgrade the HD, because the AJA Xena cards won’t do SD. Is this correct? If so, that’s a disappointment.

The AJA Xena LHe and LHi have both SD and HD i/o so you could use one of these. The LS and LSe that I listed are SD only.
