  • How can I create FCP 7-ready files with SVP 12?

I shot a one hour lecture for a colleague, who like me, shoots with a Sony NX-5U. I backed up the footage to one of my hard drives using the Sony Content Utility Manager. He claimed that there must be corrupt files on the SDHC card that I used, for he was “able to transfer the file to a backup drive but have had two unsuccessful attempts at trying to uncompress the files to a working drive.” I personally have NO PROBLEM in SVP 12 laying down on a timeline the M2TS files created by the Sony Content Utility Manager, but he said that Final Cut Pro 7 cannot use them, that instead he needs to use a program (possibly Pro-Rez?) to convert the files that uses data contained in some of the folders that are written to with the Sony NX-5U, and that possibly these are corrupt on the SDHC card I used!!?? He asked if I could make a MOV file for him, so I TRIED the template in SVP 12, manually adjusting for HD (1920X1080, interlaced, upper field first; uncompressed 48KHz audio). However, I saw 30 formats for video, so not knowing what to do I chose “none”, probably a BIG mistake for the bloated resulting MOV file is 711GB and there is a slight stutter when played back. SVP appears SO MUCH SIMPLER TO USE!! Anyway, I don’t know what to tell him! He needs to insert Powerpoint slides to finish the edit, it is HIS gig, so HE NEEDS TO EDIT IN FCP 7!! What do we do? How, exactly, can I render an FCP 7 compatible file for him using SVP 12? Or is there a program he can use to convert the raw M2TS files for FCP 7 compatibility? I would like the quickest and cheapest solution to this predicament, as he is excreting bricks and I DO want him to hire me again to shoot for him!! I can provide his exact steps thus far if need be, but perhaps there is enough info here for someone to help us out of this mess??!! Thanks in advance!!

    Option #1.
Render it out using Vegas as an mp4 file using the appropriate MainConcept AVC/AAC Internet HD 1080p template that you’ve modified to match the required settings.
NOTE: In Pro 10, Vegas used the Sony AVC/AAC Internet HD 1080p template for this and it has a CBR of 16,000,000 so I would do some short quality tests starting with that number and adjust accordingly.
Once you render it, change the extension from mp4 to mov and give it to him. I’ve done this several times for both Avid and FCP users and no one has noticed anything 🙂

    Option #2.
Both of you download and install the free Avid DNxHD QuickTime codec.
You then follow the tutorial on how to use it on John Rofrano’s site at Avid DNxHD Template for Vegas Pro

In addition to Mike’s suggestions, you can use the Motion-JPEG (M-JPEG) format under QuickTime in Vegas Pro. Every Mac should be able to read and edit M-JPEG format.

I don’t have FCP 7 but I do have FCP X and the problem is that FCP will only read original disk formats. In other words, it needs all of the original folders and files that were on the disk and if you just copy off the video files, FCP can’t deal with them anymore. It’s sad really because there is no reason for FCP to be this restrictive but it is. Luckily, I save the entire AVCHD folder from my camera cards because the Vegas Pro Device Explorer expects the entire disk structure as well.

Why should you convert the files, send him the files and let him convert them, plenty of apps out there for converting MTS>MOV/mp4/prores

I would also make it clear the problem isn’t your sd card or editor the problem is HIS system and apple unwillingness to play well with others(FCP7 does not natively suppose AVCHD files).

I created a 70GB mov file with the Avid DNxHD codec for my colleague, but for some reason he is stonewalling his D/L-Install of Avid DNxHD on HIS system–he just keeps complaining that FCP 7 won’t work with this codec, but he has not even given it a try! I told him that when installed, his system PROBABLY just would recognize the codec and he would be able to work with the file!! If he STILL has cold feet about this codec, can you recommend an m2ts-to-mov transcoder that you know personally will work and with which you have had experience? Anyone else, for that matter? FYI, I STILL think that if he D/Ls-Installs Avid DNxHD that all of his problems will go away. Any other thoughts/feedback, anyone??!!

The aforementioned colleague seeked out the aid of another FCP user here, and the latter told me, “I used a program called Clipwrap. It’s excellent. It takes MTS files and converts them into ProRes files. I occasionally get MTS files shot by shooters on the west coast who do not shoot AVCHD so I bought the software. Works really well. It might work with other platforms as well.” So here is another solution for all, FYI.
