Posted by Norman Willis on July 29, 2009 at 8:34 amI read that Vegas likes .avi files better than .mov. Is this true?
Also, I read that one can convert .mov files to .avi. How can this be done?

July 29, 2009 at 9:40 amNorman, I deal with MOV files a few times a year as the place I rent gear from to do long-form work records everything to a Mac using Final Cut.
I have no issues editing this footage afterwards on my quad core.
If you really wanted to, you could render it out as DV-AVI (assuming this is standard def video) but, if you have a strong enough computer, there’s really no reason to. -

July 29, 2009 at 10:37 amAVI is the native container for PC/Windows. MOV is the native container for Mac/OSX. In general, everything on a PC likes AVI better than MOV because it’s the preferred format. This is further enforced by the fact that Quicktime on a PC has less features/codecs than Quicktime on a Mac (probably an intentional move by Apple).
As Mike said, there really is no need to convert. I use MOV files interchangeably with AVI files all the time and have no problems. Any 3D work that I do is output as a Quicktime Animation MOV file and use in Vegas. So don’t think you need to convert them… you don’t. They work just fine providing they contain a codec that Vegas supports.

July 29, 2009 at 4:07 pmIt’s nice to see I’m not the only night-owl (lol).
OK, I’ll just try to work with the .mov files, and if it won’t work, then I’ll download Super(C), and convert.
Thanks!

I didn’t know that. Apple charges $29.99 for both versions of QT Pro 7 for PC and Mac.
I’ve browsed the Apple.com to compare the features unfortunately couldn’t find any differences because codecs/features buttons on MAC and PC pages both link to the same single list of features page.
https://www.apple.com/quicktime/pro/specs.htmlDo you have any link for the list of features/codecs that are not available in PC.
