  • How can I “add edit”, like in Avid, but only in PP2?

Posted by Tim Mccarthy on May 23, 2007 at 6:41 pm

I’m trying to edit an audio track in PP2 and I need to bring down the level in the middle of some music and I can’t seem to find a way to do it. When I used an Avid, I could “add edit” and simply put an invisible edit on any track to allow for editing right in the middle of a clip on the timeline. Does anyone know of a similar tool in PP2? Thanks.

    1. Set the display style of the audio track to “Show Waveform” (switch at left end of track).
    2. Set the “Show Keyframes” switch at the left end of the track to “Show clip keyframes”.
    3. Use the default selection tool modified with the Ctrl key to set a pair of keyframes at the beginning and again at the end of desired section of audio on the yellow rubber band.
    4. With the selection tool (no modifier), drag the inside 2 keyframes down by the same amount. The keyframes can also be dragged left or right as needed.

  • Have you tried the mixer panel?

You can get to it under the PPro 2 Window tab – Workspace -Audio Editing setting, which will call up a mixer panel. You can leave everything in default (which would be read enabled over each channel fader) There is a scroll option for each fader. Select write for the track you want to modify. If your computer is capable of keeping up, you can mix in realtime including pans as if you were at a virtual mixer. Works great. It can be destructive when write enabled, So use some previews and sluff stuff to get used to it. Also under edit preferences you may need to set up the timeline to smooth scroll. I am not in front of my editor,so I forget the exact dialog to get you there, but it allows you to visibly watch the timeline continuously during your mix, and you can anticipate your mix accordingly.

If you’re looking to do something like “add edit” in Avid, then just choose the razor tool and “cut” the timeline where you want the edits to be. That will make that portion its own clip so you could then lower the audio gain by 3dB, or whatever it is you want to edit in just that clip.

    Have fun!
