    Dear Colleagues,

I am editing a documentary on FCP 6.0.5.. I am using DV (4:3), HDV (16:9), JPEG and mp4/MPEG-4 Movie, spourcematerial.

Could anyone advise me what the best way to go is ?

I want to use this diverse sourcematerial and export the edited film in the highest possible quality.

Thank you in advance for your support.

I would suggest picking the format that you want your final product to be, then render everything into that format and cut away. Personally, I would suggest Apple ProRes at around 720P.

You can run all your source footage through Compressor to get all rendering out of the way at the start, but that might be prohibitive based on how much source footage you are dealing with and how much disc space you have available.

The other option would be to pick selects of the footage and just render the shots you plan to use. You could do this either via Compressor or in your Final Cut timeline.

    Hope this helps.

    Dear Todd,

thnak you for the quick reply. (I forgot to mention, I am in europe and edit in PAL).
I have loaded the material so far, and did already very rough cut of the material.
As I understand you, the best way to go now would be: Edit and then render the final cut of the film and then render through Compressor or FCP Timeline.

My other worries is the formats of the frame 16:9 resp. 4:3, will I have the black edges later in the screening, because of the different frameformat ?

Best greetings and thanks for your support

    Hi Sergej,
Assuming that you will finish in SD, you need to decide from the beginning if you will go 4×3,16×9 or letter-boxed.
The most of the footage you will use can work in FC but the .mp4 should be transcoded.
Try to keep track of the field order of your footage.
