I have a Kona LH, which is connected most of the time via component to my Beta SP deck. But, I have two other analog decks which I sometimes need to connect the Kona to, one is a VHS player and the other a DVcam deck, both with component out. My question is, should I shut everything down before I switch decks, or can I “hot swap” them?

Get yourself a patch bay and hot swap.

you can “hot swap” all day long. But the advice given is correct – invest in a patch bay, and you will never have to climb behind the equipment ever again.
