    Friends:

I am building a second FCP edit desk at my church. This one has a (I have limited $$) JVC TM-H1700GU 17″ monitor which offers only composite or Y/C inputs. I have purchased the Decklink Extreme card which offers SDI video out. Short of buying an SDI to composite converter (like the Marshall BC-0301-08), it looks like I could pass the Y/C output of the Decklink breakout cable THROUGH the monitor and on to my BetaSP deck input. I’d like to keep the breakout cables connected to the BetaSP deck all the time instead of switching cable connections often. I COULD monitor this from the BetaSP deck, but it will be in a different room, and if this “pass through” option seems reasonable, I’d like that.

I need to have my ‘ducks in a row’ when I pull the Quad Core PowerMac and the other items out of the boxes and hook them up, so anybody with a similar situation or knowledge of this would be appreciated.

If you folks think I can’t do this, I need to order that Marshall device pronto. With such a Marshall SDI to composite converter, would I experience latency problems?

    Many thanks!
    Greg Golden

    Greg,

Sorry, but Decklink Extreme does not have Y/C output on the breakout cable. I was surprised when I got mine because the BM ad I saw before I bought mine said the Eextreme had everything in and everything out.

    Greg,
i would just check that out with Decklink if i were you. I have the Decklink SP, and though it is a different card, both have the YUV in/out leads. In order to monitor composite, I use the ‘y’ lead and switch to composite in the decklink control panel.

If this is the case i wouldnt bother with the marshall box.
    best wishes

    Uh Nick,

Check out the desription of the BM Extreme below from the Blackmagic website. Notice anything conspicously missing from the description, like perhaps any mention of Y/C? That’s because it has no Y/C i/o, as I mentioned in my previous response to Greg.

“DeckLink Extreme is the ultimate standard definition card, because it combines the analog component YUV/NTSC/PAL switchable video and analog XLR audio in and out, along with digital 10 bit SDI inputs and outputs. Also included is unbalanced AES output, genlock input and RS-422 deck control. All connections are on a long 2 meter, 7 foot break out cable. Now available in standard PCI-33/66 or PCI Express models.”
