i’m transferring old vhs-c tpaes to DVD using a VHS-C adapter in the vcr connected to my Sony PD170 via RCA cable then firewire into my MacPro. The idea is that my camera should act as a passthrough with no need to transfer vhs-c to mini-DV first. The only problem is the lack of timecode. My question is: Is there any way to capture video with no TC?

Use the DV-NTSC DV Converter setting, since you can’t control your VCR through Final Cut.
You will have to push “play” on the VCR, then hit “capture” on Final Cut for every separate capture.Final Cut displays source timecode for logging but does NOT retain source timecode for captured clips, so it’s irrelevant that your raw VCR source tapes lack timecode. Every captured clip’s timecode will start with 00:00:00:00, regardless of the presence or lack of TC.
There should be no problem using that camera as a two-way converter, as long as it appears on the list of approved devices on Apple’s website.
