Holy COW: Who’s that New Old Dude?
Sony Vegas COWs,
I’m very sorry to see Edward go and wish him the best, and delighted to see Allan take his rightful place.
Tim Wilson, the trickster, is forcing my hand, so let’s see what happens, sorta put it to a vote. Tim ask me last week, in spite of my rankly inferior bonifieds, to be a leader here. I am very conflicted, and did not say “yes.” I, Ron Shook, do not deserve by any stretch of the imagination as yet to be up there at the top as a Vegas COW leader. I’m just a Vegas novice with far more questions than answers, and no expertise whatsoever. I’ve jumped into Vegas as an NLE replacement for my beloved Discreet edit*, but since I’m doing much more production than post-production now-a-days, I’m off to a slow start on a pretty minimal system. There are any number of regular posters here far more qualified in Vegas knowledge than I am.
Now that I’ve said why I shouldn’t be a leader here, let me say why I think that I would like to be, on an experimental basis. I am old timey COWhand from the git-go, and even before. I’ve known Douglas and Edward and the Vegas Developers as well as Tim, Ron and Kathlyn for years.
I researched NLEs up the wazoo, before signing on with Vegas, while at the same time researching the grand paradym shift from tape based to file based work flow, with a broadcast perspective as much as anything. Folks like us led the broadcast world into NLE from linear editing, but it’s the broadcast (higher end) production entities that are leading the charge into file based production for very good reasons, not all of them cost. I think that I understand the whys and wherefores of this as well or better than most and could bring that perspective to this forum. I do primarily broadcast and corporate production and in many ways a lot of producers from these necks of the woods are just as confused by where it’s all going as some of us are.
Sony Vegas: The best bang for the buck in the NLE world, bar none, IMO. And the best bang for any bucks in some areas. Having essentially an After Effects lite built directly into the NLE interface with no “integration” necessary is brilliant, as are the audio capabilities. The Vegas developers have ratcheted up the the “pro” features over time enough to make the software competitive in most areas with anything else. I’ll have some bones to pick just like any of you, and I’m not afraid to pick ’em, but all in all, I think I’ll be quite happy with Vegas for some time.
I take this COW Forum leadership quite seriously even though I may play the clown from time to time. I think everyone deserves respect and an answer even if the answer is “I don’t know, but I’ll try to find out.” I do have some resources beyond most others for finding out, if the real experts at the top are stumped or off the grid, which very seldom happens. The value to me in being on the leader board is that it’ll goose me to get a much better handle on Vegas so that I can be of more value to everyone here and more prepared to deliver when I get more post work.
Anyhow, whatdayathink about having for a time a Vegas idiot with some industry smarts on board? I have no problem with my ugly picture disappearing until I’m more prepared, but if it’s there that preparation will advance much better with your help?
