Is reaching Hollywood look more a matter of camera quality or software?

Is it possible to achieve it with average camera + tools like AE and premiere pro or does it absolutly requiere higher end equipement like the +30,000$ cameras and sophisticated production sets?

Whether one really wants a Hollywood look is a whole new discussion 😉

Your most important asset is great lighting, that’s IMO about 75% in the appearance of what you see on screen. Nothing can replace it. I’d ague that you could make a great looking movie with an $8000.00 camera, and some descent sound gear with Premiere, but the “look” of it shouldn’t worry you nearly as much as the composition.

[evrard] “Is reaching Hollywood look more a matter of camera quality or software?”

Define Hollywood look? and what era, 30s, 40s, 50s, etc, etc?

I’d attribute it to a good DP, a good gaffer and a good director. I’ve seen some stuff shot on really nice equipment by a crappy DP and all the best post production in Hollywood wouldn’t be able to fix it.
A common joke around film sets is “ah…well…we’ll fix it in post!”
I’ve also seen the reverse, good crew and DP and cheap consumer equipment, but a fantastic looking film. If you do it right during production, you can save a lot of time, money and frustration in post (or expensive re-shoots months after production wraps).
Get the best equipment you can afford, but make sure you are able to get someone who knows how to run it well. Buying the best paintbrush around won’t make you Michaelanglo.

So what parts are you interested in? FX, acting, direction, size of budget? try comparing “Lord of the Rings” to a low budget flick like “El Mariachi”, whats the hollywood look in one compared to the hollywood look in the other.

Its a collaboration of talent, skill and creativity mixed with dollars ,sweat and perserverance. Forget hardware and software.
