In preparations for buying and installing Final Cut Pro 5, I’ve just noticed that it requires an AGP Quartz Extreme graphics card. My Quicksilver Dual 800 G4 has an NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics card. Is this a for sure deal-killer? FCP won’t work in my machine?

Hard to say. My dual 1.0 GHz G4 MAC had that card with FCPHD and I only changed the card out for an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro so that I could run Motion last year. FCP 5 runs fine on my system now, but I can’t really answer about the original card.

You an try it and I would bet that it will, but no bets please.

Quartz Extreme is a fancy word for OpenGL. Your card will be fine for FCP as FCP doesn’t rely on OpenGL performance like other core OpenGL apps do. But as the other poster mentioned, using a card like the 9800 will improve performance in Motion. Otherwise, it doesn’t currently make a hoot of difference for FCP, which is unfortunate. My gut tells me we may see something otherwise at NAB 2006. Well, at least I can only hope so.

Hello, I’ve a stupid question to add to this….

I’ve just installed Final Cut Pro 5 and the application won’t run, I get an error message saying: Missing AGP Graphics Card. I have an imac G5 with a ATI Radeon X600 XT Card which says: Quartz Extreme – Supported. So why is it not working?
