Highlighting a subject during the playing of the video
Posted by Darren Cates on October 8, 2008 at 6:56 pmHello all, I am new to Video compilation but have learned alot over the last few days. I am compiling Football recruiting Videos for my 2 sons who are seniors and collegiate prospects. I have excellent footage of the 2 of them but need to know HOw I can “Point Out” or “Isolate…even Highlight” each one of them during Playback of the videos since alot of the games you cannot see the Jersey Number but the Helmet can be followed. Can this be done in Sony Vegas? I am using Sony Vegas Pro 8b. Thanks in Advance.

October 8, 2008 at 10:43 pmSure. Copy the clip(S) to a track above where they are now. On the bottom track, select an FX to make this track either partially/totally black and white, or else use Color Curves to darken all the track, or use both FX. Then on the top track, use the FX “Cookie Cutter” to make a circle or whatever shape you desire around your kid. You will have to move that circle as he moves, using keys. Depending on how much he changes place in the frame, this constant key adjustment could take you quite a while. The result would be your kid highlighted while everyone else is either darker or B&W.

October 9, 2008 at 3:00 amI just did a football recruiting video for someone and I used a Generated Media Solid Color with the Black preset on the track above the video. I adjusted the opacity of the color to make it a transparent gray. Then I dropped a Cookie Cutter FX as Rick suggested, using the Circle Cut Out, Center, Blurred preset. You have to keyframe the movement as Rick said but this allowed me to copy and paste that event whenever I needed it.
It went rather quickly because I only highlighted the boy for a few seconds at the beginning of each play. I figured if the coach couldn’t follow a helmet after having it pointed out to him… perhaps he should look for another line of work. 😉 I also didn’t want to insult the coach by keeping it on the whole time like he wasn’t capable of following a play. They really just need to be shown who to watch at the start.

October 9, 2008 at 1:59 pmAgree that highlighting at the beginning of the play only is the best approach.
It would be fun to try the ESPN-style effect by freezing the video, expanding the player of interest, shrinking him back down, and resuming. Obviously very simple, once the player is isolated from the rest of the frame. I’d personally probably do this by cutting out the player in a photo editor, but I’m sure those with the Pro version could do it through masking in Vegas as well.

October 9, 2008 at 6:12 pmStill working on it. The Cookie cutter effect is working but my computer is so Choppy when I play it back that its difficult to track. I have too many progs running with Firefox, and Sony Vegas being the largest mem Monsters…let me restart and try again…Thanks for your Helps. I also have with Firefox, about 3 or 4 youtube tutorials running to help with basics. New to this but I like the challenge of getting it right.

October 9, 2008 at 8:46 pmThanks guys! You guys are the Best!! I got the hang of it!! The Key Framing was what I wasn’t doing. Now If I can gan get to it to Freeze Frame a Key event like fumble recovery and Interception…..I really enjoy doing this!

October 9, 2008 at 9:54 pmYou can slow an event down or freeze frame using a Velocity Envelope on the event. I usually like to do an instant replay as well. You don’t want more that one or two of these so ask which are the two best plays that they are most proud of, then repeat the best moments of that play in slow motion (maybe even zooming in a bit) with the words “instant replay” at the bottom. It gives a chance to really showcase their best play.
