  • High quality software up-scaler to go from 720P to 1080P ?

Posted by Pierre on September 4, 2009 at 10:32 pm

A short project I shot that was originally intended for the internet is now going to be digitally projected from an Apple Pro-Res file in the theatre in downtown LA this weekend. The footage was shot on the HPX-170 @ 720p/n.

I have a few questions (in an effort to make the footage as good as it can be).

    1. What is the best software up-scaler that I can use to get the 720p footage to 1920X1080p footage? I also have a Kona 3 card… but I’m not sure what I could do with that (since I’m not delivering on tape). ? I have heard that innobits makes a good scaler.

    2. What is the best NOISE reducing software that won’t smear and look like shi* on the big screen?

    3. The digital tech at the theatre said I could deliver an Apple Pro-Res HQ file… would the new 4:4:4:4 pro res file give me any advantage? I doubt it … since the original footage is 8-bit, 4:2:2 720P….. but just thought I’d ask.

    thanks in advance !

Can you deliver a 720p ProRes file? I have projected a 720p 23.98 DVCPRO HD native file onto a big screen and it looked GREAT. Why upconvert if you don’t have to. But if you do, Compressor does a good job, just put all the FRAME controls settings to BEST. Run tests to make sure before you throw the whole project at it

ANd no, 4:4:4:4 is basically an ANIMATION codec replacement…it has Alphas.

Native 720p is probably going to be as good or better than anything you scale up to 1080p.

As far as noise is concerned, Video Purifier is a pretty darned good app for that.

I agree with Shane, there is no benefit from ProRes HQ. If you’re playing back from the house raid your 8-bit at 720p should be dandy.

Well I guess I was just hoping to get the best possible image… even if it was only by a small margin.
I’m a little skeptical of compressor. I’ve always gotten sort of fair results. What about bitvice or Cinema Craft MP for upscale?

Alright well you and Shane have convinced me that 720 is fine. It’ll be easier anyway.

Speaking of Purifier… I downloaded a demo copy but keep getting an error message when I try to import a clip:

“Video Purifier could not open file
    frd: file not found. ”

It does this with ALL my video files… regardless of format. I’m running snow leopard… I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

[Michael Pierre] “Well I guess I was just hoping to get the best possible image… even if it was only by a small margin. “

Bigger does not necessarily equal better.

    Fewer artifacts always equals better.

    Upscaling typically increases artifacts.

It thus follows logically that upscaling is not better.

Probably, but I’d give ’em a call.

By the time the software completes the up-conversion you could have been done using a realtime hardware based upscaler such as the Teranex.

We have one at our studio and offer discounted rates for all CreativeCow forum members.

thank you for the offer. I’ll keep you in mind for future projects, but on this one there just is no $$$.

Suggesting in this forum the use of a Teranex is like suggesting Somalia children to go to a good restaurant and get a bit fat.
