helpful plug-ins
Posted by Del Holford on July 9, 2008 at 12:31 pmHello all
We are in the process of moving edit platforms from Autodesk/Discreet to Apple FCS2. Having worked a little in FCP and Motion I find the particles and filters helpful and extensive. Where you all could help would be to tell me what plug-ins you find essential that Apple doesn’t include. Having tried to chroma key and come up wanting, would Keylight or Ultimatte be valuable? Any info would be of help. Thanks.Del

July 9, 2008 at 4:20 pmDel, keylight comes with after effects and works wonders, shake is also great, coming from a discreet background you probably should have shake in your arsenal.
I am not aware of any keyer that does a really great job inside of fcp.
I have hears some keyers do better than others, but I’ve never seen spectacular keying achieved within that app. -

We planned to add Shake to the arsenal. I was just wondering if there are other plug-ins that are “must haves” for working inside FCP itself.BTW – was there a rumor afoot about “Pandemonium” being a replacement for Shake?

Boris Continuum or RED comes to mind.
Colorista is a MUST have for color correction.(within fcp)
It produces inky blacks instead of the blue noise the fcp 3-way does with dark scenes.all of the saphire plugins are available too, you might have had those since they originated as discreet sparks.

I had Boris FX on edit* (still do but it’s going away) and they were good looking, although it took some time to figure out how to keyframe. I’ll research RED and Continuum. The Colorista would be another I’d be interested in. I do have the complete Sapphire sparks set and had asked the Apple sales guy when he was here about plug-ins, those in particular and he thought everything I needed was already aboard. Since I’m familiar with them I might go ahead and get them to start with. I appreciate the info and looking forward to the challenges the changeover will bring :-/

July 9, 2008 at 10:23 pmDitto on Shake. It’s my preferred app for keying & compositing.
Also take a look at FX Factory from Noise Industries. They have a lot of the flashy glows, light rays, blurs, stars, etc that are very handy for industrials, trailers, reality shows, etc. They work in both FCP & Motion.
And I like a weird little compositing plugin & stand alone app from DV Garage called Conduit. It’s a nodal compositor that works inside of FCP, Motion, AE, Photoshop or as a standalone. Keying is pretty good, channel operations are a snap, and it does log-lin conversions.

Good food for thought. Nice to see most work in FCP and Motion.
I’m sure it will be a joy and delight to use them and the transition to FCS2 will be perfect in every way!Del
