  • Help With Title 3D

Posted by Dan Brockett on December 30, 2006 at 3:46 am

    Hi all:

I am hoping someone can help me figure this out.

    PB G4 1.67GHz
    OS 10.4.8
    FCP 5.1.2
    QT 7.1.3

DV project started in FCP 4.5 quite a while ago. When I open FCP 5.1.2, I now always get a dialogue/warning that FCP cannot locate Title 3D. FCP then asks me if I want to manually locate Title 3D, which I do. I assume it should be in HD>Library>Final Cut Pro System Support>Plugins>Title 3D.plugin?

The actual plug-in itself is grayed out though so there is nothing FCP will let me select. The Boris folder in the effects Browser in FCP has also disappeared.

Yes, I have tried repairing permissions. Didn’t help. Have not yet tried trashing FCP’s prefs but I can’t see how that would help to bring back something that is there yet not there.

On the off chance that the Title 3D.plugin file was corrupt, I replaced it with a clean copy from my G5 system. No change, still cannot find it here on my G4 PB.

Anyone have any cures? Weird issue. Other than FCP not finding the Boris folder and Title 3D, FCP seems to be behaving fine. I am halfway through the project and already used Title 3D for most of it so I need to finish it with Title 3D.

Thanks for any help you may have for me.

This has happened to quite a few people after they used the “crossgrade”
to go from 5.0.4 to 5.1 and 5.1.2.
I went through exactly what you describe. No one here had a solution.

On a lark I made a new user account, logged in and then opened FCP.
Lo and behold, now FCP sees Title 3D.
Of course you now have to make sure your project file folder
has permissions for the new user as well as any media files.
But other than that, it’s been OK with the new user account.

It’s lousy of Apple not to issue a workaround for this or
make an update to fix it.

For me, all the crossgrade did was set up a Boris folder in the generator tab, seemed to work great, all I had to do was learn that things were in a different place.

For some of us, it doesn’t do that, and previous sequences with Title 3D titles
will not work, thus my new user “fix”. Just because it worked for you,
and I’m happy it did for most people, doesn’t mean those of us it did not work for
did something wrong. There is probably some configuration situation,
either previous to the install or after it, that is common to us that it
did not work for, but I can’t figure out what that is.

Boris FX suggests reinstalling from your FCP install disk. You can also download from here:
    https://www.borisfx.com/products/calligraphy/
The new plugin will replace the old version.
    Hope this helps.
    Have a great new year!

    Dan,

Was not suggesting you did something wrong, only that you may have missed something like I did. Sorry.

    Hi T.S.

You are a freakin’ genius for your suggestion. I re-installed and voila, there it was.

    Thanks for the solution.

    Chris, no offense taken.

    All the best,

You are most welcome. I seemed to remember having to re-download it a while back with FCP 4 for some reason. Anyway, it fixed the problem I had. Glad it helped you.
    Cheers!

I guess I was under the mistaken impression that Calligraphy and Title 3D
were different products. Who would have thought you would have a
software product, critical to your edit system, that has two different names.
If you ask for either name in the FCP help users manual, you get nothing
for either name. This makes sense why?

As far as going to the Boris site and trying a re install from there,
I will definitely try that. I don’t like having to use a different user account
just to run FCP since the crossgrade upgrade.

    Thanks for the suggestion TS.

    Still Confused.
The version of TItle 3D loaded into my Macbook Pro (Intel) is version 2.1.
    and is Universal.
On the Boris site, it says it’s 1.1. It is from 2002. It is not Universal.
How will this work in my Intel install of FCP 5.1.2?

    Yikes!

What a mess. Tom Wolsky told me that the version I was pointed to was also 1.1 (Calligraphy). But after installing the 1.1 version of Calligraphy, an item called Title 3D shows up in my broswer? I am totally confused. Bottom line is that FCP is working and booting without that stupid warning anymore.

Not sure which version is which and what the differences are and I have no Intel Macs to see if this version works.

    All the best,

    Dan
