Help with project types and encoding settings

Hi all
I’m brand new to Premiere pro. I want to edit my footage from my camcorder to a film and I’m confused as to the settings I need to not lose quality. I basically just want to view the output on my computer and retain the quality. My camcorder is a Legria HF S10 which is outputting 1920×1080 MTS files at 48Meg quality and 25fps. My question is, which sequence type should I be using at the start and which encoding option should I use at the end? I basically just want the video to be the same size and quality at the end as it was going in.

Your expectations are a bit high working with a highly compressed consumer format. You will loose some quality, especially deinterlacing for playback on a computer monitor..
Your sequence preset should be “AVCHD 1080i25” square pixels.
If your monitor can display 1920 pixels and your video is on a internal SATA 2 drive., export Using the H264 preset “HDTV 1080p 25 High Quality”.

Thanks for the response Mike, I’ll try those settings.
Is it highly compressed? Its the highest output from the camera (I realise its a consumer camera but the quality is fantastic straight out of the camera). I guess I don’t really understand why there should be any drop in quality just because i’ve stuck two clips together in some video editing software.

ok, the output from those settings looks great, just what I was after. But the video is very jerky, all the way through. Transitions and titles (i.e. stuff PPRo has generated) are also jerky so its not just the source.

Any thoughts?

The framerate on my camcorder is, btw, set to 50i (standard). It gives the option of 25p.

25p would work better if your output is for viewing on a PC monitor.

thanks – I will set it to that.
Any idea how I can make my existing footage shot at 50i not jerky? I guess its not a framerate issue as the titles are jerky too. And in my previous (guessed) encoding settings it wasn’t jerky (although it was lower quality).

Maybe try the sequence again with the AVCHD1080i25 (50i) preset. Since that is what you captured, your jerkiness may be caused by PPro trying to remove the interlace.
