  • Help with Andrew’s LightSaberV2: motionblur issues

Posted by Lucas Pfaff on February 3, 2008 at 1:10 pm

    Hi there,

I fear this is another crappy question wich is answered already, but trust me: I didn’t found it with the search. Maybe it’s because my english isn’t that good, I’m sorry for that!

    Here’s my problem:
I used Andrew Kramers great LightSaberV2-Preset in the past and made a small clip, everything worked perfect.
Now I’m using it again, and I’m going crazy. I’m using it with AE CS3 (german version but with the english shortcut), on Vista x64.
First of all it does not work properly; it’s the “Missing: Saber_Controls” issue. I can use it anyway, with thick and thin it at “__FX_Saber__” manually.

So I made a clip with it (with motionblur and obscuring). When I play it back with space, all goes well – but if I press 0 on numblock for RAM-Preview (or render it out), there’s some strange issue. The core goes blue sometimes (I fixed this with crushing the blacks with “curves”), and the really strange problem is this:

This still was made with the AE Frame Capture, here’s a manual token still (when it’s not RAM-previewed):

It seems like it cuts every motionblurred part. I tried using CC Force Motionblur, it does not worked. I did touch the shutter speed, but resetted it; motionblur is activated in the composition and the precomp (saber and obscure), the clips like the compositions. The red color are the sticks there were fighting with, just if you want to ask.
I don’t really understand this, and the problem is: I need these clips, it’s for a important production. Sure it would be possible to make these with 4 points etc, but I don’t really have the time anymore; because I in preproduction I thought I could use this preset, haha.

I really hope there’s someone out there who can help me; thanks a lot!

Oh, and just have another look to this issue, with the blue cores (this is so ridicilous because there’s simply no color; if I make the saturation -100 it turns grey…?) and the not-working motionblur:

Without motionblur the sabers are ok, but there blue anyway. And I need those motionblurs :-/

    Regards from Germany,
    Lucas

    Hi Lucas,

What a pain! I used Andrew’s preset in a film I made last year, and used AE7. I’m not sure what’s going on here, but Andrew made the preset for AE7 and so it mustn’t work in CS3. It wouldn’t be the first thing that didn’t transfer properly. You might have to save the project file in AE7 format and render it from that; forget about CS3 completely.

    Hi there Simon,

I already thought of that. I like CS3 because of Multithreading.
I tried it, but I couldn’t open the file (because of CS3 format).
How can I get it in 7 Format?

    Regards,
    Lucas

    Hi Lucas,

Dang! I just assumed you’d be able to save in a legacy format – you can with virtually every other programme out there! I’ve never had to do it with AE myself, and it seems there isn’t an option.

On the other hand, perhaps it’s a problem with how the expressions reference one another or something because you’re using a German version of CS3. I’m using an English version and the preset seems to work fine for me. You say that the motion blur starts to disappear only when you ram preview? When I preview it still looks ok.

    Best,
    Simon

    Hi Simon,

it’s true I’m using the german version, BUT you can start it in english with an special shortcut (I’m doing this all the time… in german I can’t find any effect, crazy names! :-)). As I said, it worked a half year ago, with “this” version (on an other OS).
I thought of failures with the expressions, and they are there; that’s why it’s “Missing: Saber Controls”.

Yes, when I’m rendering – only than. That’s the strange thing; in the normal preview (I think it’s “rendering” the frame you’re at) there’s everything Ok. I don’t get it.

I wouldn’t assume the expressions aren’t working just because it says missing: mine says that and works fine. Sorry I can’t be more help!

And what would you say if I’d showed you this?

Aha… That ain’t good… Sorry, I wish I had a clue what was going on here, particularly as I will no doubt want to use the preset in CS3 myself at some point.

    Hi there Simon,

I could fix it! At least partially.
    Here’s how it works:
Copy all the Keyframes from the Clip of Start-/Endpoint and paste it into the editor. Then, at the beginning stands “Adobe After Effects 8.0 Keyframe Data”. Make it “7” for “8”, copy the hole thing and paste it to the same clip in AE 7 – and god damnit, it works!

I had to make some corrections on the Start- and Endingpoints, but it’s better than nothing.
I uploaded this clip for you – it’s not perfect, I like the colors but the clashs aren’t bright enough yet – and of course, there had to be sound 🙂

    Thank you, Simon!

Excellent, glad to hear there’s a solution. The footage looks good – if you’re not happy with the flash, try using the one provided by Ryan Wieber at ryan-w.com (if you’re not already – hard to tell!) I’ve found it looks quite good if used at moments of maximum impact.

    Hi Simon,

actually, I like my flash. They are visible for max 2 frames anyway. I should only make it bigger.

But I’ll will try this flash – thanks for this – and everything else.

    Regards,
    Lucas
