  • Help! What is the best way in AE to render image for Film output?

Posted by Dvjimmy on June 13, 2005 at 12:06 pm

    Hi dear all:
I am working on a 5 sec pure CG film title animation by After Effects, use 2K (2048×1536, 24f/sec) format.
But I still have some unknow area about AE render for film
    First: Should I use 16 bit/channel?
Second: What format for render to get the best quality? Targa Sequence / Tiff Sequence or Cineon Sequence?? I never use Cineon Sequence for output, how to set to get the best 16 bit/channel film output?
Third: How to handle the color correctly?

I know these question might hard to answer shortly, if anyone knew a websit or a book that I can collect all the information, please direct me !

    Thank you very much!

    Hi Jimmy,

You’ll find that the Meyers book Creating Motion Graphics With After Effects has a chapter covering most of the issues involved in working with film. You’ll certainly nead to know about colour LUTs (look up tables) and the like to make sure that your work will be correctly translated to film.

I think (someone else can confirm this) that the subject is covered in volume1. If you do a lot with AE you want to have the book anyway, its brilliant.

Actually, the only way to do an educated guess of what your material will look like once it’s printed to film is do tests. Output a couple of frames to film, and compare them to your monitor.

There are also some high-end film-mimicking tools that will take your output and process it to predict the result of the film transfer, but since the process is quite dependent on the method and transferhouse it needs a lot of tweaking to get it to work well.

The alternative is to do an additional color grade at the transferhouse where they usually have their monitors adjusted to match their film output.

    Hi Barend:
Thanks your help, I guess I will do some test as well, before I process the print.

    Best!
