help! Unkown recorded format – SONY HVR-V1
Posted by Caroline Leone on April 21, 2008 at 11:52 pmhello!
I have started logging footage recorded with SONY HVR-V1E.
The big problem here is that no one in the crew knows in what format they recorded the images.
I need to set up the FCP project, so that’s a piece of information i really need to know…
does anyone knows how to find that out after it was all recorded? could FCP tell me how was the original footage recorded (fps, number of lines, etc)?thanks for the time and help,

April 22, 2008 at 12:57 amI believe the V1E is a pal camcorder (V1U for US). If they shot in HDV then try the HDV 1080p25 setting. If it was shot in DV, then use the dv pal setting.

April 22, 2008 at 1:08 amhello jeremy, thanks for the reply,
the V1E is both pal and ntsc.
they shoot in HDV.
in fcp they are a few setups for that…
HDV 1080i60, 1080p30 and 720p30…that’s for 29.97
for 23.98 there are:
1080p24, 720p24.i know it’s ntsc for sure…

April 22, 2008 at 1:27 amYou can rule out 720p and you can also rule out 24p.
Try 1080i60 first, then 1080p30. If that doesn’t work then try dv ntsc.
I am pretty sure the V1E (Europe) is pal, and the V1U (US) is ntsc, but I could be wrong and I am sure you’re right. I was unaware that Sony made a ‘world’ camera at that price point, but crazier things have happened.

April 22, 2008 at 1:32 ami have tried them and they all work!!!
i put the clips on the timeline and there’s no need to render or anything…
i worry about after the projext is finished, when i export the edl and go for tape to tape. if the project is 30fps and the real thing is 24 we will have problems…
about the ntsc, i only know for sure because i am in brazil, and here the system is ntsc, and the camera playbacks perfect on our tvs.
the Z1, and older version of this camera also has 60i or 50i formats. -

Cool. You learn something new everyday.
Alright, you captured all formats and they all work? Do they all playback correctly?

Do you have to deliver @ 24? If not and you are editing @ 30 you are just fine as the edl will match the recorded tc.
If you step through frame by frame, do you see interlacing?

April 22, 2008 at 1:45 ami have to deliver 24…
and the director says he recorded in 24.
but in fcp, when i look at item properties it says 29.97.this will be a novel… problems have only just started.
all setups i tried play back perfect.
i’ll check the interlacing tomorrow when i look at the material again (great idea by the way) -

April 22, 2008 at 1:54 amIf he shot 24p, then it’s 24p with pulldown, so you will have to remove that pulldown after you capture or during your capture as I know that you can’t record 23.976 natively to HDV tape.
From the FCP 6.0.2 release notes:
“Sony HVR-V1 HDV Tape-Based Camcorder Support
Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 is compatible with the Sony HVR-V1 HDV camcorder, which is capable of recording 1080p24, 1080p25, and 1080p30 footage. You can capture natively or capture to either the Apple Intermediate Codec or the Apple ProRes 422 codec. You can also output back to the Sony HVR-V1 camcorder using the Print to Video command. To natively capture 1080p25 or 1080p30 footage, you should use the HDV 1080i50 and HDV 1080i60 Easy Setups, respectively. Your footage will retain its progressive scanning even though it will be stored in an interlaced format. You can capture 1080p24 footage using the 1080i60 Easy Setup, but your captured footage will retain 3:2 pull-down in this case.
For transcoded capture of 1080p24 footage, 3:2 pull-down is removed during transcoding, resulting in footage stored in the 1080p24 Apple Intermediate Codec format or the 1080p24 Apple ProRes 422 codec format. You can also capture 1080p25 and 1080p30 footage to either format, although Easy Setups are not included for these formats. In these cases, your captured footage is stored in the 1080p25 or 1080p30 Apple Intermediate Codec or Apple ProRes 422 codec format.
Here are the recommended workflows for capturing from and outputting to the Sony HVR-V1 camcorder with Final Cut Pro 6.0.2:
24p/60i on tape: Capture to the 24p Apple Intermediate Codec or Apple ProRes 422 codec, then output to the HVR-V1 camcorder in 24p/60i mode.
25p/50i on tape: Capture to the 25p Apple Intermediate Codec or Apple ProRes 422 codec, then output to the HVR-V1 camcorder in 25p/50i mode.
30p/60i on tape: Capture to the 30p Apple Intermediate Codec or Apple ProRes 422 codec, then output to the HVR-V1 camcorder in 30p/60i mode.”So it looks liek you can either capture 108i60 and remove the pulldown yourself, capture 1080p24 and have FCP remove the pulldown (I have no idea what that does for your EDL, test test test), and you can even capture 1080p24 ProRes, have FCP remove the pulldown and work in ProRes (again, test test test the EDL).

April 22, 2008 at 2:01 amthank you very much jeremy.
that was great help.this v1 has two modes (i just downloaded the camera’s manual) 24 and 24A.
i’m guessing here that 24A is the real 24, and 24 is the “film look”, recording in 29.97
that might be what’s happening…
i will test edls tommorow. i will let you know!
thanks for the patience.carol
