    I’m new to AAE, have experience with photoshop. I would like to make a text box layer that is solid on the left and fades and becomes transparent to the right. Can I do this in AAE or should I create this in photoshop? Any suggestions?

    I’d start off by taking a look at Masks and Track mattes in the Help.

    2 possibilities:

    one way:

    create a solid layer, or use the graphic layer on which you want the effect.

    with the mask tool, draw a rectangle that falls mainly outside the solid, but overlaps where you want the gradient to be.
    like this:

                  |                     |
    +-------------+--+                  |
    |             |  |   rectangular    |
    |     solid   |  |   mask           |
    |             |  |                  |
    +-------------+--+                  |
                  |                     |

    Now give that mask a mode of subtract and a horizontal feather until it looks right. You can move the mask to the left or right to fine-tune, or use the mask-expansion parameter

    other way:

    add a transition -> linear wipe-effect
    Transition Completion: 20%
    Wipe Angle: -90

    Wow, that was easy! Thanks for the help. I tried all night to figure that out on my own with no avail. I’m sure I will have more questions, thanks again.
