  • HELP! Sony PVM-20L5 question

Posted by William Barns on March 4, 2025 at 2:05 am

Sorry for how old school this might seem.

I’m attempting to set up some Sony PVM-20L5’s for a retro video installation. I’m trying to run a HD signal into them using a HDCAM J-H3. The monitor won’t seem to take the HD-SDI signal. The tape is 59.94 1080i, which the PVM-20L5 should take… I thought. I have been able to run a SD Composite signal successfully. But no HD-SDI or SDI.

Any suggestions, ideas or workarounds ?

    Hey William,

Have you got pictures of your setup?

Have you checked the menu on both VTR and Monitor?

I would also suggest that you use sync to lock the signal between VTR and Monitor.

Thanks for the reply! I’ve thought about the sync issue. I don’t think that’s it though, because the PVM will use sync from an external input as well as a generator. Also if it was a sync issue I should still be able to see something, even if it were scrambled.

When nothing is hooked up to the PVM it just displays a black screen. When I hook up an HD-SDI source I get noise/snow. So some kind of signal is affecting the monitor.

    🤔

    Hey William,

Do you know if the HD out-put of the VTR works on other devices/monitors?

And, has your monitor HD-INPUT worked in the past?

Might be a board that needs to be reinserted, or that has gone altogether.
    Rare but possible.

I’ve been doing as much reading as I can find on the PVM-20L5 and I think the answer is that it is not a digital monitor. But I’m not 100% sure. In the manuals they talk about it accepting a 1080i signal but they don’t mention if it is via SDI or not. Also there were apparently adapter boards that you could buy to allow for an HD-SDI input. Which leads me to think that it didn’t have that capability out of the box. These monitors are from 2004.

2004 was well within range of HD-SDI monitors being released.

Have you tried using Line B as the input?

If your HDCAM J-H3 has the Componenet board, that might be worth trying?

Your monitor only has SD analog inputs if there are no optional input boards installed on the left side slots. The single BNC connector is for analog SD composite video. Here is a pic from the brochure that shows the optional input boards needed for HD input.

    Well done, Randy!

None of the online searches, including Image search, got me to that brochure…
