  • Help, need to know if anybody is doing 1080 on PPC with Tiger

Posted by Peter Wiggins on January 21, 2008 at 11:50 am

    All,

I’m putting the final touches to a new plugin that has been 9 months in development. It contains some cutting edge image processing that may be too advanced for 1080 projects on a PPC running Tiger – The old hardware & software combination just might throw an odd artifact or two.

So my question! Is anybody still using PPC & Tiger combination to cut 1080 material or has everybody moved intel/Tiger/Leopard or PPC leopard?

    Thanks

    Peter

sure. we have a number of Quad G5’s running Tiger/FCS1 combinations with an all 1080i workflow … I can probably arrange a few quick tests for you if that helps BUT we don’t have FxFactory installed

    Andy,

That would be great, I’ll contact you off list.
You do have to have FxFactory installed as the plugin uses their QC engine. However you don’t have to purchase anything for it to work with the new erhem, pretty cool plugin 🙂

Yes, there are still some of us out here doing HD work on older machines and we love plug-ins. Especially cool ones.

    Thanks,

Trust me its cool! but is is a problem trying to support the older combinations of hardware/software especially when they are doing heavy lifting

I’m now thinking it might be a graphics card issue! ATI v Nvidia

Yes, the graphics card tends to be the big issue when dealing with older machines. Processing power really makes the difference in real-time and render times, but the graphics support is a make or break situation. Best of luck and hope you can make it work for us in the G5 world.

    Thanks

    Eric,

What model are your G5’s and what graphics cards do you have installed?

I have a Dual 2.7 Ghz powerPc G5 with 6.5 GB DDR SDRAM and an ATI Radeon 9650 graphics card with 256 MB VRAM.

Hope that helps as I don’t think there are faster cards for the G5s.

    Hi Peter,

I do 1080 work on a G5 2 gig with an X 800XT card and 4.5 gigs Ram. Never really have any problems.

What does this plugin you’re making do?

    Have a wonderful day.

Well, the plugin is a bit secret but we hope to launch this week.
Its not the writing of the plugin thats the pain – its all the testing! Aaaaargh!

Might take a couple of you up on giving it bash 🙂
