  • Help: Grayscale Map to simulate effect 3D on type layer?

Posted by Eric Goldstein on October 7, 2007 at 6:59 pm

    Hi,

I’ve got type layer that is tracked to a person’s hand. The type layer is flat, but the hand has various bumps and depressions on it. I’d like to integrate the type layer more effectively with the hand.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to simulate the hand’s surface topography on the type layer? Maybe take a grayscale image of the hand and utilize that somehow with the type layer?

    Thanks for your help,

Aharon’s tut on Horror Text on a Wall uses a Displacement Map to do what you want (3 1/2 minutes in), here:

    https://library.creativecow.net/articles/rabinowitz_aharon/horror_text2.php

It’s just a matter of getting the right grayscale displacement map for the distortion you want, but this is definitely doable.

Aharon has a three part series on Displacement Mapping, just click his head, main page, and scroll down.
