  • HELP! EDL and Split Edits

I have a simple sequence about 3 minutes long I want to export to EDL CMX 3600 for an online test tomorrow morning.

All I get are the first 3 events. As soon as I hit the first split edit – it stops! Why? My EDL experience is limited – is there a settting I’m missing?

Everything is on V1. All audio is on A1. All cuts. Except one dissolve.

I even tried deleting the audio track and sending just the video out but it did the same thing.

I’ve tried a different sequence, taking out all split edits and making just straight video and audio cuts. Same thing – I just get the first few events.

FWIW, during the original capture the tapes were poured in as big (approx 22 min) “capture now” clips.
I then subclipped (using command/apple U) per each scene and take and gave each a unique name.
My understanding is that FCP views subclips created this way as a type of master clip – so they should export to EDL OK.

    Oh help. TIA

Make sure every source has a valid reel number

Afraid that I’ve had a lot of issues with CMX3600 export in FCP – one version I used it barely worked at all (and once I ended up playing a GV track through a DV bridge into the online system then resyncing and manually cutting out the blacks!).

Have you checked if the clip that it barfs on is a freeze-frame? Don’t know about EDLs but I’ve been using an XML-based workflow on a large project recently and we found that Apple XML v2 doesn’t seem to like them very much, the export breaks silently so you only realise when you try to re-import it (think that it has an issue if the clip appears to be zero-length). We ended up manually replacing the freeze-frames with text clips giving the timecode, then manually conforming, freeze-framing and inserting them.

Thanks to those of you that responded.

I worked it out but it is still very weird.

I tried this after reading something in the manual about how you can edit an EDL in any text reader application. I opened Simple Text and imported the EDL’s – everything was there! Even though the EDL’s themselves only showed a few events – ALL events showed up in Simple Text. Split edits, all audio, no problem.

Went to the online test and the Smoke editor opened them up – everything was there too. He used both the Simple Text version and the actual EDL.

I don’t understand it. But there ya go.
