HELP connecting ANALOG Sony Hi8 mm videocamera to PC and caputure in PRemiere pro

You need a converter of some sort to convert the video from analog to digital and provide the proper interface for the computer, ADStech.com “Pyro A/V link” and canopus.us “ADVC series” or a DV camcorder with passthrough.

heey,

in that case, pinnacle systems has also a product line that comes alot cheaper. but those product will do the trick at a nice price tag

on my videocard, i have a composit input. so i think i can put a link between the “video out” of my camera and my pc, only how do i capture the footage then. i don’t think i have any deck control with premiere.. if i link a real big video8 camera to my pc

any ideas?

The Pinnacle boxes and your TV card are just toys and wont work with Premiere. Step up to the $200 ADS Pyro A/V link or buy a used DV camcorder with pass-thru capabilities or go play in a sand box.

second, why won’t they work on premiere? ofcourse, more expensive is better…right but why?

I have mutiple DV cam’s but how do i know if they can pass through the data?

The less expensive hardware captures video as a more highly compressed format like Mpeg 2, which might be fine as you view it, but after editing it will be recompressed again and the results are often poor.

The other solutions capture as DV (Digital Video) which is about 4X as large as your Mpeg 2 or other proprietary codec.

Premiere is designed as a DV editor, but with some very expensive hardware ($1K+) can edit most anything above DV.

Plug in any analog source to your DV cam via S/Video or composte, then plug your DV cam into your PC via firewire. Play your analog source. If you can see it on the DV cam’s LCD, you should be able to see it in Premiere’s capture window and capture it. You may have to make a setting in the DV cams menu (analog-in or AV-In)

To add to Mike’s post, most DV cams in the VCR mode have a menu selection “A/V ->DV Out” On/Off, in the On mode it passes Analog to DV, in the Off mode it passes DV to Analog which can be a help as you can use this to help preview the video you are working on in a external Video Monitor which can give you a better idea of the final product.

those sony hi8 cam’s are realy before my time (1985, and i am 19 myself now) so thanxs for the info. weird there isn’t a “analog camera” forum on this nice website though. but okey. now i can get filming my shots knowing i can get them on my pc, thanxs ^^

The ADS Pyro AV Link is an excellent choice and available now for under $150! The Canopus/ Grass Valley converters are bit more expensive. Boththe ADs Pyro AV Link and the Canopus ADVC converts the old analog signal into DV and sends in into your computer via FireWire. The quality of the video is excellent and Premiere Pro will edit the DV footage with ease.
