HELP! Can’t hear voiceover on smart phones, tablets and older built-in audio systems
I’m having bizarre audio problems with this video which my intern and I produced with Audacity and Adobe PremierePro
If you listen to it through headphones, or on the built-in audio on a newer desktop, the voiceover and music sound pretty much like they’re supposed to. But if you listen to it on just on the built-in audio of a smartphone or tablet, or on an older desktop or laptop, then the voiceover either goes away completely or is faint or garbled. The music sounds fine, however.
This problem occurs on Vimeo, YouTube, the system that the university uses, and the system that the Atlantic Monthly uses to host video on its website, so it’s obviously intrinsic to our file, rather than to one of the channels.
One clue to what’s going on. When I change the L/R settings on my iPhone (in General > Accessibility) so that it’s all the way over toward the L, I can hear the voiceover as well as the music, in the right balance.
Any thoughts? This is driving me totally crazy. I’m really proud of the video, but since I found out about this problem I almost feel like I don’t want to show it to people (friends, family, potential employers) because there’s a decent chance they would hear the bum version.

Sounds like voiceover is two-channel, left and right, each out-of-phase with the other. So they cancel when summed in a mono output device. I suspect you recorded them mono, so interesting how they could have got multi-tracked in workflow somewhere. Some plug-in enabled unknowingly? Surround, chorus?
