Help: 16:9 different on timeline
Now I’m really confused! I’m editing a project I shot on miniDV in 16:9 with Sony DVD2100 cameras (three cameras). This is only the second project I’ve edited in 16:9 and I’m new to FCP 5 (4 months) coming from M100.
The first project went fine. However, something is going “different” on this one. I just finished editing one taped segment that I captured (preset the settings at 16:9 anamorphic) where the whole thing was on the 16:9 screen frame with the letter box look, i.e. the black lines above and below the picture and all of it within the 16:9 framing (the aspect ratio in the distort section of the motion tab is -33.33). It looked so good and right that I didn’t think about it until I brought in the second segment tapes (both about an hour long). Nothing looked stretched either. This second one, also shot by the same cameras in the same time period and in 16:9, filled the entire 16:9 frame in FCP5 (which I’m now thinking is the correct one), no letter box look. This looks good, too and nothing looks cropped or stretched. Bringing them in to new sequences makes no difference.
Anyone have any ideas what’s happening here? Why did FCP5 set the first clip/tape in a letter box fashion with the aspect ratio at -33.33 – and the second in full 16:9 screen – aspect ratio at 0? Obviously, I need to manually change the aspect ratio on one of them, probably the letter box one to fill the screen but I’m a little uncertain about the best way to go bout it. Is there any way to change all in one movement? If I hadn’t already edited the entire first part, I’d just resize each captured camera angle and get on with it. What might I have done wrong? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
