HELP!! 1080 24p Madness on Final Cut Studio 2

If the clips were shot at 1080 24PA, then in the log and transfer window, hit the advanced button (that looks like a gear) and select preferences. Select removed advanced pulldown. This should remove the pulldown that was added by the camera and you’ll have 23.98 files.

If you’re clips where shot at 1080 24P, then you’ll want to use cinema tools to remove the pulldown. But don’t get frustrated that the clips went to 1280×1080! That’s what they’re suppose to do because it’s DVCPROHD. FCP should still recognize it at 1920×1080 (stretching the image). If QT doesn’t recognize it, which is sometimes the case, the you can change settings that it displays in the visual settings of the file (Window-Movie Properties- Video Track-Visual Settings – uncheck the Preserve Aspect Ratio and change the width to 1920).

If I remember correctly, your clips are 1080 24p not 24pA, right? Since they are 24p they are supposed to come in @ 30 fps because that’s what they are and you aren’t removing any pulldown. Once you go to Cinema Tools and remove the pulldown, you will have 23.98 media.

1280×1080 is native DVCPro HD size. What you are seeing is correct.

1) you’re dealing with DVCPRO-HD material which * REALLY IS* 1280×1080. It’s an anamorphic format (sometimes QT or FCP says it’s 1920×1080, but that’s simply the extrapolated frame size. Flip the Anamorphic switch in Clip format if it’s looking squeezed.

2) even if you’re clips are 23.98, the compressor is DVCPROHD 60i. Doesn’t mean they aren’t 24fps, just the version of the algorithm used to compress them.

And cinema tools is correctly making 24fps for you, right? just screwing up the aspect ratio?

I made the mistake of believing the preview window, in which the aspect ratio looks wrong after doing the reverse telecine. When importing those file into FC6, they actually look right and are 23.98. Is there any way to make these file 23.98 upon import into FC6 making this a 1 step process instead of 2?
At least it’s working…

If your footage is shot 24p then no, if you shot 24pA then yes.

ok, what you may want to do in the future is shoot 24pn, this will literaly eliminate the extra 6fps and save you room not only on your HD but more importantly your p2 device. (be it cars or something else)

You can’t shoot 24p Native in 1080 on an HVX200, only in 720. He wants to shoot 108024pA to get one click pulldown removal.
