  • helmet cam clips don’t show video in Vegas

Posted by Michael Bosworth on August 24, 2009 at 3:30 am

I have a fairly new helmet cam from Oregon Scientific. When I try importing the clips into Vegas, Vegas handles the audio fine but not the video. (And won’t let me put any video on the timeline.)

These same files can be read directly by Windows Media Player, and the video is definitely there.

The properties of the helmet cam files:
    Image, 640 x 480
Audio, bit rate 64 kbps, format CCITT u-Law
Video, frame rate 30 frames/sec, data rate 559 kbps

I use Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, Version 6.0a

I’ve tried adjusting the Project Properties by putting in the 640 x 480 and the 30 frames/sec rate, but to no avail. And there does not seem to be any of the canned templates that exactly match.

Leaving me perplexed and miffed thus far.

Why not take it to Super and convert it to .avi which Vegas likes.

You could ty droppping it on G-spot to find out what codec is needed and if you have it installed.

what file format does your camera shoot in, on the top right of your project properties tab there is a folder that sais match properties, click that folder it will let you browse to whatever folder your clips are in, select the clip you want to use and your project will match those properties, I have a feeling its your format though, tell us what that is and someone might be able to help you, GOOD LUCK

I did download G-spot and dropped one of the clips into it. It says that the associated codec is MJPG – Motion JPEG and that “CODEC(s) are installed”. Also, for the container, its says: File length correct & AVI v.1.0.

Tried downloading Super including AVSVideoConverter but that installation did not complete. (A DrWatson debugger kicked in.)

When I bring any of the clips into Vegas, an associated AVI.sfk file is created.

The helmet cam’s documentation says “Sensor resolution 640×480 VGA CMOS sensor”, and also “Movie images AVI”.

In my version of Vegas the top right tab in Project Properties says is called the Match Media Settings tab. When I click on that and browse to any of the clips in question, it doesn’t do anything to change the default NTSC DV settings.

    Thanks for your help, Shawn.

Regarding the file format, the manual says “Sensor resolution 640×480 VGA CMOS sensor”. That’s the closest thing I could find to a file format description.

I did go to Project Properties, where the upper right tab is called “Match Media Settings” in my version of Vegas. I selected one of the clips in question but that did not change any of the default settings at all. (Which default is set to NTSC DV.)

One other clue is that, whenever I import any of the clips into Vegas, an AVI.sfk file is created. But that doesn’t change being unable to see the video in Vegas.
