I currently use enable time remapping to extend a layer’s head and tail, but is there an easier way to do this? What would be nice is if we can add head and tail and it appears in a lighter colour that the comp, so we can see where the actual comp starts/stops within that extended section.

    Thanks!

Rather than time-remap the entire layer, I’d duplicate the layer once for the head and again for the tail, then position the CTI and use Layer > Time > Freeze Frame to create “holds.” Adjust the layer timing to the head ends right before the regular layer begins and the tail begins right after the regular layer ends.
