  • HDX900 – star filter look on headlights and shart light sources

This may just be the nature of the beast, but last night, while I was out trying to capture some good thunderstorm shots at dusk on my new HDX900, I was a bit distracted by the “four-point star filter” look that all of the tiny points of light (headlight, streetlights, et.) exhibited. I did not have my shutter engaged. Was shooting at 1080 60i. Is there a way to minimize this effect? I have another CCD camera – a Sony DSR570 – and don’t remember the effect being this pronounced, but of course it’s an SD camera.

    Any words of wisdom appreciated.

Your filter wheel was most likely rolled to “A” which is often a “star filter”. Try “B”, “C” or “D” and see if the effect goes away.

    Wynn,

The star filter effect you describe (in specular sources like headlights) can also come from the iris of the lens. The number of points often corresponds to the number of blades in the iris, especially when closed down towards the maximum.

Dusty is right. It was on filter A. I’m a moron. Thanks for your help guys. I’ll go ponder the apparent meaninglessness of 28 years of shooting experiece now.

Ahhhh, we all have had blond moments. Here’s mine. I was having audio issues on one channel of my Betacam. So, I sent the camera in for repair and told the guy Channel one was lower in volume and I coundn’t get it match Channel 2.

Well, as many of you guessed already, I had the viewfinder vol control turned down and forgot about it. Duh!
