In a couple of days I’ll be shooting with a HDX 900 in 1080-50i, 25P for broadcast in the UK.

I’m slightly confused by the ‘System Mode’ & ‘Camera Mode’ settings within the ‘System Settings’ of the Main menu.

I’ve set the ‘System Mode’ to 1080-50i and the ‘Camera Mode’ to 25P. Is the 50i referring to ‘Interlaced’? By switching the ‘Camera Mode’ to 25P I presume I’m shooting in Progressive.

How does this affect the shutter? should it be off or set to a ‘Half’?

I’m more used to cameras where I set to progressive and then switch the shutter to a 50th.

Any advice appreciated. Subject matter by the way is people climbing trees in a forest so no high speed required.

In 1080 mode, the camera will actually record interlaced. The 25p is framerate. What happens is, the camera records to tape at 1080/50i and adds the 25fps pull-down automatically. And yes, set the shutter to ‘half’ to get an accurate film/shutter look.

Yes a bit confusing when you first use HDX or Varicam..

The half shutter means its giving you a 180 degree shutter angle for what ever you have set the camera for… ie a half.. so at 25p half shutter is 1/50th.. just saves you having to work it out yourself. As far as i know anyway !!

And in theory replicating a film camera.. sometimes I,ll switch it off if I need a bit more stop.. as long as not alot of action in the scene its fine..

I 2nd that. I switch it off once in a while too for the extra stop.

Glad it went well… HDX900 is a good swissarmy knife camera.. good for freelancers.. and way cheaper than F900R… you can also shoot slo-mo in 720p mode ie shoot at 50p for 25p

I quite liked the camera but the viewfinder is not my favourite. Mind you I’m not keen on the one on the 750 /790 always seems a tadge milky to me. Might be that the Hire Company have put on a cheaper one but I doubt it.

Hopefully I’ll get chance to try the 720p slo mo at some stage.
