I have a project that’s nearly complete. It was all edited in HDV 1080i60. I will be dropping it off for DVD mastering in a few days. The guy who will be doing the DVD has asked that I get him a DigiBeta Submaster. He said something about getting the project into 4:2:2, but wasn’t exactly clear about the process. I have a location where I can drop the HDV sequence straight to Digibeta.

    my questions:

If I go straight to Digibeta, does that, by default, make it 4:2:2?

If not, what would be the steps from FCP to get it ready to output to DigiBeta? Do I need to put my project in a 8 bit or 10 bit sequence and render?

    Any thoughts are appreciated.
    Cheers

FCP when you render should scale the footage, but it probably won’t look as good as third party software, and it will take a long time…

It would help if you had 3rd party hardware, ie. AJA or Blackmagic card. Export via SDI to DigiBeta Deck.

Because the fellow is asking you to output to Digibeta he mus be running your project through a hardware encoder. Thats just fine, good hardware encoders are fast (realtime) and do a spiffy job. However, outputting to Digibeta first is an extra step that in your case, since you have no BM or Kona card, will be time consuming, somewhat expensive, and, because you’ve not done this before, possibly prone to introducing technical error. I would suggest that you reconsider this workflow and either encode yourself using Compressor, or ask him to to do it for you from a file that you deliver on a hard drive.

[David Roth Weiss] “since you have no BM or Kona card”

    …or, as I left out, a Digibeta deck…

correct. He does have a hardware incoder and a TerraNex and a bunch of other shiny expensive toys. I have access to a Kona card at the location with the DigiBeta Deck. We are currently pushing other HDV footage through to their Digibeta for a project in Smoke. I know the process will work, but am really just looking for best practice with getting this stuff to 4:2:2 and out to DigiBeta. Also, trying to avoid a major render if possible, but that wouldn’t be the end of the world I guess.

    Thanks for the posts.

You can output 16×9 anamorphic via the Kona directly to Digibeta from your HDV timeline — DBeta is 4:2:2 native.
