HDV playback Issue in FCP
Hi Everyone,
I have just captured a piece of HDV footage from a Sony Z1E via a Black Magic Pro card and into the Mac. However if I try to play the footage back in FCP, either in the viewer, or on the time line it will play approx 6 seconds ok and then start to lag / drop audio / picture freeze. I have checked that it is not the footage as I can start it anywhere in the timeline and it will play for the 6 seconds. I checked with a friend last night and his Mac handles HDV fine and my mac has better specs so I can’t see what the problem is? Please Help!
Final Cut Pro: 6.0.6
Sequence Preset / Capture Preset: Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 50 Uncompressed (I’m in the UK so working in PAL)
Mac: 10.6.7 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon 8GB Memory
Hard Drive: Internal / Third of drive Free (over 320GB)
Disk Read Data Rate in MB/s 94.7
Disk Write Data Rate in MB/s 81.4HDTV 1080FPS – Disk Read 23 Disk Write 20 (8 Bit Yuv 4:2:2 Frame Rates)
I have also set the RT to unlimited in Final Cut Pro and it still does the same. I’m guessing that there is a setting somewhere that is causing it but would love any help anyone could give as I have a tight deadline and this drving me insane!

Disk Write Data Rate in MB/s 81.4”You need a very powerful RAID to playback Uncompressed video. 94.7 mb/s doesn’t even come close. You need a minimum of 160 mb/s.
Use ProRes to solve your problem.

This is not an HDV playback problem because you are trying to playback uncompressed HDTV. Very different.
Import it as, or convert it to Apple ProRes. (No need to use HQ for original HDV footage).
Get another drive so your video files aren’t coming off the same drive as the boot drive which has the fcp app and project files on it. This can be an external firewire 800 or an internal SATA in one of the spare bays inside your computer.
