I hired some out of town producers to shoot an interview, and they shot some footage in Sony HDV Pal. Lovely. It imports via Firewire into FCP just fine. My question is, when it comes time to author an NTSC DVD, will Compressor convert the frame rate for me (when I choose an NTSC DVD setting), or do I need to use Cinema Tools or something else? OR should I convert the footage on the front end (before editing and output)?

If you’re finishing to 23.98, I’d use cinema tools to conform it from 25fps to 23.98. It will slow the footage down by something like 4%, but it will be smooth.

If you’re finishing to 29.97, then I’d use Natress Standards Converter.

If you just let it be, FCP and Compressor don’t handle the conversion well and it will look choppy.
