    Hey guys,

wanted to get a couple opinions- Currently I am happy with FCP workstation. I use AJA IO/LA and most of my work is SD workflow and have little to no complaints.

I am starting to do more HDV work and using the Sony HDV template in FCP is also fine. My one question is this – if I wanted to preview my HDV sequence on an HD ready monitor, what are my best options (cost effective please) to allow me to do so? I realize I could just use my HDV deck as a throughput and I am NOT ready to buy an IO HD just yet. But are there any suggestions, inexpensive hardware, or tricks to preview otherwise?

    Thanks in advance.

Actually, you CAN’T route it thru your HDV Camera or Deck to get an HD image. FCP 6 allows you to send a downconverted DV signal, but not an HDV.

If you already have an HD monitor, the cheapest route to go would be to get a Decklink HD Extreme card. $995 and you are set.

If you DON’T have an HD monitor already, and by that I mean NOT an HDTV…different things…I’m talking HD production monitor…then the combination of the Matrox MXO and Apple Cinema Display would be the cheapest way to go. Believe it or not, you can get a broadcast quality signal to that ACD with the MXO. I am demoing that tonight at the LAFCPUG meeting in LA.

The drawback to the MXO is that it is OUTPUT ONLY. The Decklink allows you to capture SD, HD, upconvert SD to HD, cross convert…all sorts of things. But, you need that HD monitor, which can set you back another $4000+.

Shane, I read your review on the Matrox-to-ACD and am very interested in choosing that as an affordable monitoring solution for the new HD edit system that I’m building. As part of that system I have been leaning toward the Kona 3 card for capture. If I go with the Matrox-ACD solution for monitoring, would the Matrox be connected to the Kona card or directly to the computer? Does this combination look reasonable to you?

Thanks very much for your time.
