  • HDV: Is it possible to work with DV & HDV footage in one project?

I am planning to upgrade to a Canon XH-A1 camcorder and film my next action sports film in HDV. My question arises from the fact that I won’t be upgrading my entire fleet of cameras to HD. For example some footage will still be shot in DV with a Sony VX2100, Panasonic PV-GS500, and several single chip sony ‘bullet’ cams. So I’m wondering if it is even possible to combine 24F HDV footage with 29.97 DV footage into a single Premiere project?

If so, what does Premiere do with the varying framerates? The project will be setup for 24F HDV footage, so for one will Premiere convert the 29.97 framerate down? And how will the resolution of the smaller DV footage fit in a HDV composition? Will it stretch to fit? I’m not familiar with this.

Will the DV footage quality and format be too ‘different’ to flow even decently with the high quality HDV footage? I’m just wondering if it’s a bad idea to combine the too formats and if I’d be better suited to sell off my DV cameras and purchase additional sub $1000 prosumer HD cameras such as the ones Sony offer. Any thoughts?

    Thanks
    Tom

You would get better results shooting all the same frame rate and all the same frame size. No question.

You could upscale the SD to HD frame sizes using After Effects, but there are programs that do a better job, such as ReSizer or Instant HD.

I would also use After Effects to get them all to the same frame rate if required.

Then use Premiere Pro to edit.

For the money your best bet to be able to edit almost any format, any frame rate and any acquisition, would be to purchase one of several I/O Hardware accelerators/Cards.

For instance, I am moving to HD level as well and we edit using 100% adobe production, from the new onLocation direct to disk software to Premiere CS3.

An example would be to check out AXIO LE, SD or HD systems or Conopus or AJA or Blackmagic. These piece can and will give you what you need in versatility on your project timelines, to include ingestion and exporting.

Then your Production can have less restrictions.
