  • HDV into FCP capturing a tape without ‘scene’ breaks

Posted by Robin on August 11, 2005 at 12:22 pm

Ok I’ve figured out what is going on here.

When capturing HDV into FCP you have a choice of how FCP reacts to where the camera has been switched off and on again.

It will either stop capturing or it will split up the clips when it sees a break. This is actually really annoying for me!

I just want to capture the whole tape as one clip and then decide where I want to split my clips.

I’ve seen a piece of software called lumiere hd, but have no idea if this will solve the problem (let me capture as one big clip)

    Any ideas?

You can tell FCP to ignore timecode breaks and it will simply give you a warning at the end of the capture that timecode breaks are present.

Keep in mind however that your timecode will not be accurate for any clips after the first TC break. So you will not be able to go back and recapture just one clip accurately in the future.

FCP will not do this with HDV at the moment, I refer you to the following article:

    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301715

    This is the key line:

    Warn After Capture
When you capture HDV, this option behaves identically to the Abort Capture option.

    And there lies my problem

    Try this:

When capturing HDV footage from a Sony HDV camcorder using Final Cut Pro 5.0.2,
you can choose how Final Cut Pro creates media files and clips when start and stop
indicators are detected. (Start/stop indicators occur on a tape in places where
recording was stopped and then started again.)
To choose how Final Cut Pro handles start/stop detection when capturing
    HDV footage:

If you have not already done so, choose Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup, then select an HDV

Ah, as I haven’t worked with HDV footage to date, I have not experienced that. All of my work has been DVCPro HD and HDCAM.

I’m betting that limitation has something to do with how the footage is recorded on the HDV tape.

It’s to do with the fact that HDV works with Mpeg2 GOP files or something.

    I’m trying something new now…

I’ll give you feedback if it works to save someone going through my last 24 hours experience.

Man you are doing so much to help me out, I really appreciate it. So cool of you.

Funny we must be on the same page. I just found the exact same page from the Apple site. I’m trying it out with the two settings-

One in Clip settings (checkbox off)
and also the setting in user preferences.

Hopefully the combination of these two settings will fix the problem.

I’ll let you know in about 15 minutes…
