I don’t like assuming anything while I have my own opinion here, I want to remain open just in case I have overlooked anything.

I have has a few clients ask me if I plan to use an HD camera in preparing their web destined video which will be 4:3 and somewhere between 64X480 and 320X240. I tell them that it’s not necessary and not going to buy them anything primarily since the final content will be reduced in frame size and there is no viewable HD web content anyway. I am missing anything? One gets the same results when even beginning with native DV media at 72×480 then reducing this to say, 320×240. There is always a loss in video quality.

    Comments are certainly encouraged.

I am replying to my own post to correct several errors which I should have caught before posting–rushing usually results in waste and confusion, sorry indeed.

I have had a few clients ask me if I plan to use an HD camera in preparing their web destined video which will be formatted 4:3 with frame sizes between 640X480 and 320X240. I tell them that using HD is not necessary and will not offer any improvement to the end product. My experience is that when reducing the frame size using as an example, DV in 720×420 native format, there is a loss of definition in addition to the average mobile or personal device used to view the content does not support a wide screen format.

    Am I overlooking something?

    Comments encouraged and welcome.

First of all, you have to shoot pretty carefully with a 16:9 native camera to make sure the center 4:3 image is kept centered.

Other than that, if there is a desire to export a full frame HD image later, then HDV makes sense.

Other than that, there is no real difference between a 320X240 image taken by a decent SD camera and one taken by a HDV camera.

You might, however, notice that a lot more web video is 16:9 now.
